Running Retreat – 1-3rd July 2022 – Chiltern Hills

Come and join us for a weekend of trail running in Goring – on -Thames  where the beautiful Thames Path, Chiltern Way and Ridgeway trails meet. Spend two fun days focusing on your running with likeminded people. All speeds, experience and ability welcome;  no one gets left behind!

RETREAT ITINERARY

Friday 1st July 

1600 – 1900 – Arrive at Streatley YHA, RG8 9JJ where we have exclusive hire.  

Time to settle in, unpack, relax and meet your fellow runners.  Feel free to explore Streatley.  It is a short, scenic walk down to the Thames where the river, birds, boats and weirs create a stunning spot to people watch.  Alternatively, stretch your legs by walking up Streatley Hill and gaze to down the valley below. 

Streatley Youth Hostel is bunkhouse style accommodation, with rooms taking between 4-6 people. The clean showers and toilets are shared on multiple floors. There is a large self service kitchen, dining area and communal sofa area plus a garden with picnic benches and views of the rolling hills surrounding Goring. 

1900 – Optional Evening Run: an easy paced run (3-5 miles) around the local area.  Just the thing to work up an appetite for dinner!

2000 – Dinner from Mission Burrito – enjoy soft tacos loaded with chicken, pork, beans, vegetables and rice, nachos and guacamole. Puddings from local bakery (The Old Farmhouse Bakery). Please remember to bring your own drinks. 

After dinner, free time to chat to others on the retreat in one of the communal areas – inside or out, play some games, browse the “pop-up running book library” or just relax. 

Pre-order your takeaway lunch to collect from local cafe by 2000. 

Saturday 2nd July 

0730 – 0830 – Self service breakfast of croissants, muesli/ cereals, fruit and yoghurt. Juice, tea and coffee. 

0900 – 0945 – Stretch and Flexibility sessions with Coach Elkie and Coach Kate. 

1000 – 1200 – Run Session – Drills, Hills and Thrills.  A 90 min session focused on trail and hill technique.  Expect some up/downhill reps and team challenges/ relays. 

1200 – 1400 – Shower and Lunch. Lunch is not provided by us so it is an opportunity to try one of Goring’s lovely eating places (Pierre Ponts, Coppa Club, Goring Grocer and there is also a Tesco Express).  Each evening you can pre-order baguettes and salads from Pierre Ponts to collect the following day.

1400 – 1500 – “Common Running Injuries’ – Presentation from Physiotherapist,  Amanda Wall. Understand what the common running injuries are and why they occur. Learn how to prevent running injuries and maximise your enjoyment from running. 

1500 – 1530 – Break: snacks provided by Pierre Ponts Café, tea and coffee available.

1530 – 1630 – Workshop on Mindset from The Grounded Coach – Janine Green. Janine will be helping us understand our motivations, what happens when we face setbacks and how we set goals. All with a dose of nature.

1700 – 1900 – Running Quiz:  It’s like a pub quiz…… but with running! No prizes for speed, but this quiz will test your knowledge of running trivia, running folklore, athletics and maybe some questions on just actual running. There is also an active element – no sitting round a table with a pint and a packet of crisps (although we can do that too…) so you will need to be in running gear! 

1900 – 2000 – Dinner of vegetarian chilli made by Pierre Ponts Cafe with rice, served with breads and dips. New York style cheesecake with fruit compote. Please remember to bring your own drinks.

Pre- order your takeaway lunch to collect from local cafe by 2000. 

After dinner enjoy a chat with other runners in the inside areas, or outside on the picnic benches, or wander down into Goring for a sundowner drink by the river.

Sunday 3rd July 

0700-0800 Self service Breakfast of croissant, muesli/ cereals, fruit and yoghurt. Juice, tea and coffee. 

0900 – 1200 Run session – Long run – there will be a number of different pace and distance groups and you can choose which you join. The shortest will be 6 miles and the longest likely close to 18 miles. There will be a Run Leader for each run who knows the route and keeps the runners together. Bring your own water and fuel (gels/ bars) for the run. 

1200- 1400 Shower and lunch – again runners arrange their own. 

1400 – 1500 Nutrition and Fuelling – Presentation with Coaches Kate and Elkie. How to get your nutrition on running days and non-running days right. How (not) to fuel your long run and what to eat in ultras.  Top tips and tasting of fuelling options for use during your long runs and races.  

1500 Retreat formally ends.

Optional Activities: Open Water Swimming or stand up paddle boarding – please book your own slot  here. Or just spend some time exploring the local area before heading home. 

If you would like to stay a third night you can extend your stay for a mere £25.  You will need to provide your own evening meal and breakfast and please check out by 10am. 

The Coaches

Elkie and Kate will be your Coaches for the weekend. Elkie has worked with hundreds of runners in the last 8 years to help them achieve their goals and has some impressive road times to her name. Kate has run over 40 marathons (many ultras) across the world and her playground is now the Chilterns. Kate loves helping others get the best from their running.

Location 

Less than 2 hours driving from London. Parking on site and free parking on nearby residential streets. Direct trains from Paddington to Goring -on-Thames which is a scenic and straightforward 12 minute walk to Streatley YHA.

£325 for the weekend (excluding lunches).
